Boxerwood Nature Center and Woodland Garden
The center is a fantastic area to relax and spend a day with the family, offering year-round activities, presentations, exhibits and special events designed to encourage a closer relationship with nature.
Description
The Boxerwood Nature Center and Woodland Garden is a sanctuary open daily during daylight hours. The center includes a network of easy and short trails that wind and connect while intersecting with various wildlife habitats including a forest, meadow, wetland, and orchard. Each area has information available about the inhabitants.
The trails are sprinkled with art pieces and sitting areas, some shady and some sunny. Young children can spend some time in the aptly named “Play Trail” with areas for them to “Dig to China” as well as manage their own mud pie restaurant! The center also features live music for more family fun.
Boxerwood boasts over 2,000 cultivars and 4,000 native trees and shrubs with significant collections of Dwarf Conifers, Magnolias, Dogwoods, Rhododendrons & Azaleas, and Japanese Maples.
Driving Directions
From the Lexington Visitor Center, turn right onto Washington Street, followed by a left onto Jefferson Street. Drive .2 mile (2.5 blocks) to a right onto McDowell Street, followed by a left onto Jackson Avenue. After .4 mile (4 blocks), turn right onto Ross Road and drive 1.5 miles. Boxerwood Nature Center will be visibly marked on the left, 963 Ross Road. Note you will be driving through residential neighborhoods. Please watch for children and pets!
Tips
- Parking is $5 unless you are a Boxerwood member.
- Visiting Boxerwood is free, but donations are a kind and welcome gift to assist with protecting and providing these areas of natural play and exploration.
- Don’t wear your best clothes or shoes, as this place is meant for dirty kid fun!
