Once called “the North Fork of the James,” the Maury River runs from its headwaters above Goshen Pass through Lexington and down to the confluence with the James River in Glasgow. Fishing the rushing waters below the dam at Jordan Point offers good opportunities for bass, fallfish, carp, and panfish. The Chessie Trail can be accessed across the river from the park and provides ample shoreline access to slower water sections downstream. A canoe launch above the dam can be used to access the long upstream section of slow-moving water with excellent fish-holding habitat. Smallmouth bass are abundant with some reaching trophy size.

From the Lexington Visitor Center, drive west on Washington Street to a right onto Main Street (US-11 Business). Continue driving north for .9 mile past Virginia Military Institute. Turn left at the 1780 Stone House and before the overpass. Follow the access road to the left onto Stono Lane. Cross a small bridge and use the parking area for Jordan’s Point Park.

• The abundance of bass and panfish makes for high catch rates and provides a great introduction to fishing for beginners.
• The slow water above the dam extends for nearly a mile and makes for easy out-and-back paddling excursions.

• Once a trade-and-transportation hub in Lexington during the 1700s and 1800s, this historic site turned public park displays a bateau – a flat-bottomed wooden boat used to transport goods along the canal system. The adjacent Miller's House Museum celebrates the history of transportation in Rockbridge County.
• A covered pavilion, picnic areas and grills are available at Jordan’s Point. Source your lunch locally with Buffalo Creek beef hamburgers from Cattleman's Market. After a day on the river, devour a hot pizza and cold beer on the deck at Salerno’s.
